TCC Supports Governor Abbott On Sanctuary City Policies

Members of the Texas Conservative Coalition sent Governor Abbott a letter of support for his position on sanctuary city policies, prompted by Dallas Sheriff Lupe Valdez’ new policy on immigrant detentions:

Dear Governor Abbott:

The Texas Conservative Coalition (TCC) supports your position regarding the announcement by Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez to decline to honor certain immigration detainer requests going forward. Such actions are part of a larger movement nationally to create “sanctuary cities,” which thwart the rule of law and endanger local communities and their residents. Sanctuary cities have no place in Texas or the rest of the United States.

In the letter to Sheriff Valdez, you suggest several reforms including laws to prohibit sanctuary cities, requiring local law enforcement to honor federal immigration detainer requests, evaluating the costs of sanctuary city policies to local taxpayers, and holding county governments financially responsible for the actions of illegal immigrants who are released as a result of a failure to honor a federal detainer request. TCC supports the legislative options highlighted in your letter.

In fact, TCC supported Senate Bill 185 (84R), which aimed to address the problem of sanctuary cities in Texas by withholding state funds from political subdivisions that enact rules or ordinances prohibiting the enforcement of state and federal immigration laws. SB 185’s author (Perry) and four coauthors (Campbell | Hall | Huffines | Taylor, Van) are TCC members. TCC also supported House Bill 12 and Senate Bill 9 (82R), which also would have prohibited sanctuary cities, and addressed major border issues and crime related to illegal immigration, respectively. With your support next Legislative Session, we will address these issues and press to end sanctuary cities in Texas.

With the memory of Kathryn Steinle still fresh in our minds, it is inconceivable that any local official in Dallas or elsewhere should be allowed to repeat the mistake that led to Steinle’s brutal murder at the hands of a dangerous illegal immigrant—one who repeatedly violated the law through seven felony convictions and five separate deportations to Mexico. The Sheriff of San Francisco released Sanchez after marijuana charges against him were dropped. Municipal leaders in San Francisco will have to live with the consequences, but Texas will not take the same chance.

We are available to assist your office, and we are prepared to take legislative action when the time comes.
