President Donald J. Trump
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500
Dear President Trump:
The Texas Conservative Coalition (TCC) writes to congratulate you and your administration on a job well done in your first year as President of the United States. Justice Neil Gorsuch was an excellent choice to replace Justice Antonin Scalia on the U.S. Supreme Court. Justice Don Willett and his Texan colleagues, James Ho and Andrew Oldham, will ensure that the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals remains a principled bench, dedicated to the Constitution, for decades to come. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act has already begun to spur economic growth and provide needed tax relief to millions of Americans. However, it is for your administration’s work in rolling back regulatory burdens and overreach that TCC wishes to express specific gratitude.
Throughout the Obama Administration, conservatives opposed the President’s aggressive form of governance. Numerous Obama regulations and administrative actions were imprudent. Some were unlawful. Some were unconstitutional. During this period and into your first year in office, TCC members in the Texas Legislature often wrote letters to you and to Texas’s congressional delegation, urging an end to these actions. The topics of these letters include:
- Rescind the EPA’s Clean Water Rule (Aug. 2, 2017)
- End the Bureau of Land Management Red River Land Grab (Feb. 23, 1017)
- Rescind the “Dear Colleague” Bathroom Guidance (Feb. 1, 2017)
- Rescind the EPA’s Clean Power Plan (Jan. 6, 2017)
- Rescind the EPA/DOT Fuel Efficiency Standard target of 54.5 mpg by 2025 (Dec. 22, 2016)
Your Administration has resolved or is in the process of resolving all five of these TCC priorities. The legislative branch has been bypassed in its role as the sole lawmaking authority in the federal government for too long. It should be the members of Congress making such important policy decisions, not executive fiat. Therefore, we support your administration’s decision to end the Federal Communications Commission’s Net Neutrality rule, to cease the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Operation Choke Point, to pull out of the Paris climate accord, and to rescind the Title IX “Dear Colleague” guidance letter on campus sexual assault. We also support your 2-for-1 executive order, which will slow the growth of the administrative state, often called the fourth branch of government.
The federal government is too big. The Obama Administration inherited an already inefficient government and made it bigger and more politicized. Efforts to rein in Washington D.C. represent a change that TCC members can believe in, and we encourage you to continue advancing this cause.
