AUSTIN – The Texas Conservative Coalition (TCC) today issued the following release regarding the special session item to reduce mail-in ballot fraud.

Senate Bill 5 by Sen. Kelly Hancock (R-North Richland Hills) and HB 184, by Rep. Craig Goldman (R-Fort Worth), will allow prosecution and increase penalties for those who engage in a systematic, organized effort to submit fraudulent mail-in ballots in contravention of state election laws.

“As evidenced by the massive investigation currently underway in Dallas County, there is an urgent obligation for the Legislature to act,” said Senator Hancock. “It’s time to address this issue head-on, and that’s why we’ve filed legislation during the special session to crack down on mail-in ballot fraud.”

In the weeks leading up to this year’s May election, evidence of a large-scale, coordinated effort to submit fraudulent mail-in ballots on behalf of unsuspecting Texans emerged in the cities of Dallas and Grand Prairie. Attorney General Ken Paxton teamed up with the Dallas County District Attorney’s office to investigate the allegations, and the case ultimately uncovered 700 suspicious mail-in ballots that were later sequestered.  Although the case is ongoing, the Texas Legislature aims to pass SB 5 and HB 184 this special session to preclude similar cases down the line.

“When illegal, organized activities undermine the mail-in ballot system specifically,” said Rep. Goldman, “we have a responsibility to do what we must to stop it.  Protecting the integrity of our elections is of the utmost importance.”

Support for this legislation continues to grow as 36 TCC members have signed on in support of the effort, including:
